Nestled in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales village of Thwaite, in the heart of Swaledale, Westholme is a welcoming dog-friendly cottage in an outstanding location. Situated just yards from the famous Pennine Way as it passes through the village, this charming retreat is perfect for walkers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape surrounded by spectacular countryside.
Comfortable and full of character, Westholme accommodates up to four guests across two attractive bedrooms. The spacious master bedroom features a double bed and an en-suite shower room with a shower cubicle and wash basin, while the second bedroom offers a small double bed, making the cottage ideal for couples, friends, or small families.
The cosy living room provides the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the Dales, with exposed wooden beams, traditional wooden flooring, and a rustic open fire creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Guests can enjoy a TV with built-in DVD player, a selection of books, and a fold-out dining table. The bright and charming kitchen is well equipped for self-catering stays, although please note that there is currently no washing machine or tumble dryer. Adjacent to the kitchen is a separate enclosed room containing the cottage’s WC and wash basin.
As with many rural Yorkshire Dales locations, mobile phone reception can be limited, but guests can enjoy excellent complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the cottage.
Outside, there is parking for one vehicle directly in front of the cottage, with additional roadside parking available nearby within the village. While Westholme does not have a private garden, dogs can be exercised responsibly on the grassy common land opposite, and there are countless footpaths and trails surrounding the village to enjoy together. Guests also have access to a private garage just a few metres away, ideal for storing bicycles, walking equipment, and outdoor gear.
Westholme warmly welcomes dogs and is designed with canine companions in mind. Up to three dogs can stay free of charge, with no restrictions on where they can go within the cottage. Additional furniture throws can be provided to help everyone relax in comfort. Larger numbers of dogs may also be accommodated by prior arrangement.
The cottage enjoys a truly exceptional setting between Great Shunner Fell and the imposing slopes of Kisdon. From the doorstep, guests can explore miles of scenic walking routes, including the Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast National Trail, and the popular 52-mile Herriot Way circular route. Often regarded as the most beautiful of the Yorkshire Dales valleys, Swaledale is home to some of the region’s most charming villages, including Keld, Muker, and Gunnerside, all just a short distance away.
Many of the Yorkshire Dales’ most celebrated attractions are within easy reach, including the stunning waterfalls of Kisdon Force and Wain Wath Falls, the famous wildflower-rich Muker Meadows, and the dramatic Buttertubs limestone potholes. Reached via the spectacular Buttertubs Pass, one of the most scenic roads in the Yorkshire Dales, these natural landmarks showcase the area’s remarkable beauty.
Whether you’re looking for days spent exploring the fells and valleys or simply somewhere peaceful to unwind, Westholme provides the perfect base for discovering the breathtaking landscapes of Swaledale and the wider Yorkshire Dales.
