Accommodation Overview
Herdwick Barn is a beautifully converted stone barn set just outside Sedbergh, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Surrounded by spectacular countryside, it makes an ideal base for exploring the walking trails, landscapes and outdoor adventures of both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District — or simply escaping to the peace and quiet for some well-deserved relaxation.
Step through the patio doors onto the terrace and take in the spectacular views across the Howgill Fells. When the temperature drops, retreat indoors and settle in front of the cosy wood burner — the perfect way to unwind after a day exploring the countryside.
Herdwick Barn sits within half an acre of securely enclosed grounds, making it an excellent choice for guests travelling with dogs. The cottage is also within easy walking distance of Sedbergh, giving you the best of both worlds: peaceful countryside surroundings with the town close by.
This charming two-bedroom barn conversion has been thoughtfully designed for comfortable stays, with both bedrooms benefiting from their own luxurious en-suite shower rooms. The spacious open-plan living area provides a welcoming space to relax, cook and dine together.
There’s also private parking for up to four cars, along with an EV charger operated through the Monta payment system.
Outside Space
The attractive private patio is the perfect spot for alfresco meals, a leisurely morning coffee or an evening drink. It overlooks the garden and paddock, with uninterrupted views stretching across the surrounding meadows towards the Howgill Fells.
And the views don’t disappear when the sun goes down. Sedbergh enjoys designated Dark Sky status, so on a clear night the skies above Herdwick Barn come alive with an incredible display of stars. Step outside, look up and enjoy one of nature’s finest shows.
The local area
Nestled between the Howgill Fells, which sit between the Eastern Lakes and Western Dales, Sedbergh is a true hidden gem. The landscape may be gentler than the dramatic crags of the Lake District, but don’t be deceived — there are plenty of challenging and rewarding walks waiting to be discovered.
Known as England’s Book Town, Sedbergh is home to a wonderful collection of independent shops, cafés, bookshops and welcoming traditional pubs. It’s the perfect place to browse, enjoy a leisurely lunch or settle down with a well-earned drink after a day on the fells.
The location also makes it easy to explore further afield. The South Lakes are within easy reach, while Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Windermere and Ambleside are all just a short drive away.
Yet despite being so well placed for exploring the wider region, Sedbergh retains a peaceful, unhurried character — making Herdwick Barn the perfect place to escape, slow down and enjoy the best of the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District.
