Accommodation Overview

Nestled within the stunning Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Devon, our glamping site offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature, with birdsong and the gentle sound of a flowing brook creating the perfect setting to unwind.

As an off-grid site, we recommend bringing wellies and suitable outdoor clothing for the ever-changing British weather. Please also note that the site is located beside the river, so children must be supervised at all times near the water.

While there is no Wi-Fi on site, mobile phone reception is generally available depending on your network provider. Charging points are provided for your convenience. Bedding and kitchen utensils are included, but guests should bring their own beach towels. A complimentary starter basket of logs and kindling is supplied on arrival, with additional supplies available to purchase if needed.

During your stay, you’ll have access to the site’s compost toilet, solar-powered shower, and communal kitchen facilities. Guests can also book time slots to enjoy the sauna or cold plunge bath.

Gertrude features a private terrace with beautiful larch railings — the perfect spot to unwind with a book, enjoy sunset drinks, or dine alfresco to the soothing sounds of the nearby River Otter.

Designed for comfort in every season, Gertrude is fully insulated throughout the floors, walls, and roof, with double-glazed hardwood doors and windows to keep the space warm and cosy year-round. A wood-burning stove provides extra warmth on cooler evenings, while off-grid copper lighting, powered by roof-mounted solar panels, adds both eco-friendly practicality and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Every detail inside Gertrude has been thoughtfully chosen to capture a timeless vintage charm. Characterful touches include Bakelite-style light switches, handcrafted copper wall and ceiling lights, copper curtain rails, handmade herringbone tweed curtains, and a classic black metal LPG stove.

The interior is finished with natural chalk-pine tongue-and-groove panelling and pine timber flooring stained in a rich medium oak tone, creating a warm and rustic feel throughout.

The accommodation includes a comfortable double bed, along with a sofa that can be converted into an additional bed for a third guest if required.

Built with both durability and sustainability in mind, the exterior walls are constructed from insulated aluminium, layered with a weatherproof membrane, and clad in locally grown British larch. Above, a curved corrugated galvanised roof adds both character and long-lasting protection from the elements.
