The Local Area

Nestled on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, the peaceful village of Lastingham is just four miles north of the A170, which runs between Scarborough and Thirsk along the southern edge of the Moors.

Small, peaceful and steeped in history, Lastingham is a wonderfully tranquil place to escape the pace of everyday life. With fewer than 100 residents, the village has retained its traditional character and offers a warm and welcoming base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. The Lastingham Village website is also a useful source of information for visitors.

At the heart of the village is The Blacksmiths Arms, a traditional village inn serving food and drinks throughout the week. With its welcoming atmosphere and characterful setting, it’s just the sort of country pub you’d hope to find in a Yorkshire village.

Opposite the pub stands St Mary’s Church, one of Lastingham’s most significant and historic landmarks. Beneath the church lies an ancient crypt, built in 1078 as a shrine to St Cedd and St Chad. St Cedd travelled from Lindisfarne and established a monastery at Lastingham in AD 654, and his resting place can be found beside the altar in the crypt. The church and crypt offer a fascinating glimpse into the village’s long history and provide a wonderfully peaceful place to pause and reflect.

There’s plenty to see and do within easy reach of Lastingham. Family favourites such as Flamingo Land Theme Park, Eden Camp Modern History Museum, Hutton-le-Hole Folk Museum and the North York Moors Railway are all within the surrounding area. History lovers can explore magnificent places such as Castle Howard, along with historic abbeys, cathedrals and stately homes.

And, of course, the countryside itself is one of the area’s greatest attractions. From ancient woodland and rolling hills to heather-covered moorland, peaceful dales and the dramatic Yorkshire coastline, there is an abundance of beautiful scenery to discover.

The North York Moors National Park covers around 554 square miles and offers an incredible variety of landscapes, from vast expanses of heather-clad moorland and secluded wooded dales to dramatic cliffs and sheltered coves along the coast. With miles of walking routes and breathtaking scenery, it’s a wonderful destination for walkers, nature lovers and anyone looking to escape into the countryside.
